Many people search for the Top 10 DVD Rentals to see if their collection resembles everyone else, to decide what rental to get next, or to see how the classics rank against the newer commercial releases. So what exactly are the top 10 DVD Rentals? Going by data taken from 8 of the leading online DVD rental companies, the list for the past year looks a little something like this, but please be aware newer titles need at least a full year to climb up the rankings. It’s definitely a mish mash:
1) Sex and the City - the number 1 DVD rental this year is Sex and the City the movie. Judging by the fact that the majority of DVD renters are actaully female, and the fact that it came with a pre-programmed audience, there’s no surprise here. Plus the film was awesome!
2) Pulp Fiction - it seems every year a new generation of people discover this amazing movie. Full of action and an unusually arty narrative make this the rented favorite in film studies classes and by current/soon to be Tarantino fans.
3) The Godfather - perhaps slow by today’s standards, the sheer hype surrounding this classic keeps it high on the rentals list. If you haven’t watched the Godfather you apparently haven’t lived, so people keep renting it.
4) Hellboy 2 - a lot of purists shunned this movie, but it got big hype and a lot of rentals. On its own it wasn’t a bad movie at all.
5) Goodfellas - perhaps the most perfect movie ever made. If every movie could tell a well paced epic story of rags to riches to rags like Goodfellas, then critics would be out of a job.
6) The Dark Knight - dark is the word. Thinking about the colorful Batman and Robin cartoons from your youth? Think again. This is a bleak masterpiece.
7) Last King of Scotland - based on a true story of the brutal Ugandan dictator Idi Amin’s regime as seen by his personal physician during the 1970s. It has nothing to do with Scotland!
8) Fight club - the first rule of Fight Club is to rent the DVD at least once a week.
9) Devil Wears Prada - Ugly Betty in movie form with less cheese. It obliterated rankings in 2007.
10) Audition - This movie has a cult following. At least one of your friends has seen this film and lived to tell the gruesome tail. Will you rent it next? Just be aware of wire cutters.
So there you have the top 10 DVD rentals. Probably not what you expected, but then you wouldn’t be searching if you knew what they were. My personal favorite rental happens to be Goodfellas!
