“You’re going too fast, what is the actual process of online DVD rental?”

online dvd rental service

It’s quite simple, instead of going to the store you go to the company’s website, whether it be Blockbuster, LoveFilm etc and sign up with your details; usually your name and address so they can send the DVDs out, and your credit/debit card details so your card is on file for when your free trial period is over. This isn’t Joe Blow’s backstreet bargains; I don’t remember a company like Blockbuster ever being fraudsters so don’t worry about giving your details online. If however we do come across credit card fraud (which we haven’t in 6 years) we’ll make sure to let everyone know!

  • Each website has an easy to use interface whereby you browse an online catalog of DVDs and sometimes video games. You can browse by genre, new releases, most popular and various other parameters, as well as using the search function to find a specific title. The top services have over 65,000 titles (20 times more than the average store front), including all of the latest releases and even some rare movies that are no longer on the shelves of your local rental shop.
  • The selection process differs however from normal rental, in that you select a list (as long as you want) of all the movies you want to see and when these titles become available they’ll send them out to you. Occasionally older films or popular new releases are not available right away so the system moves down your list and picks the next title. What’s good is you can order the list by preference so you get what you really want first.
  • When signing up to an online DVD rental service their are various packages at various prices that determine how many discs you are allowed at once, and how many discs in total you are allowed per month. The most expensive packages allow you to have 5 discs at once and unlimited DVDs per month, meaning you get a hell of a lot for your money if you watch 5 movies a day. What’s good is you can usually select what package you want for your free trial, so one month of free unlimited DVDs is not a bad deal at all!
  • Postage is also a very simple process. The company will send out your DVDs by first class (or the equivalent in your country) meaning you’ll get the discs in a day or two. Once you’ve finished watching them (you don’t have to send them all back at once) you slot them in to the prepaid envelopes and pop them in the mail box… simple. A nice feature most of the companies have is a little box you can tick on the return envelope that states if the disc was faulty or not. Even if it was your fault, they tend not to ask questions and simply ship out a replacement disc. When they receive your movies back, which can be monitored online, they’ll immediately move down your list and send out the next batch.

“So what are these free trials all about?”

The online DVD rental business is very competitive, with many companies working to get you as a customer. I know, very flattering. Well they are all itching so badly for you to join their online DVD rental service that they’re offering you no strings attached free trials. Some for a few weeks, some for a month, some for several months! All offering their own perks.

Because there are loads of different online rental services all offering free trials you have the potential to go on for months, just by changing to a new service when one trial runs out. That’s right nod your head and smile.

Now I’m not an advocate of this, in fact I subscribe to one service because I like the way they do business and their environmental friendly policies on packaging, but in theory there is nothing stopping somebody canceling one trial and moving on to the next, in fact I have one friend who swears by it. (He’s going to hell), but it does work.

If you wish to cancel a free trial before you’re charged your first bill simply go to your account options on the website and cancel it, or phone them up and cancel it (they may blither on for a while, but just say you’re in a rush) or call your credit card company and tell them to unauthorize any transaction from them. If you have a phone phobia you can use an empty prepaid credit card so it bounces, or use a site like fakenamegenerator.com to get a fake credit card number so it doesn’t work. (note this is not illegal, you can never buy anything with a fake number, it just allows it to be stored on the system so you don’t have to input your real details and when it comes time to bill, it will fail and your trial ends). All of this being said, a trial is a trial and if you like it, stick with it!

“I still have some questions!”

What about sports and adult titles?
A lot of the major companies carry adult titles. In theory you have to be 18 years old to use these services so it isn’t an issue. As for sports, most of the major sports titles are released. I know wrestling is a particular favorite and most companies have WWE DVDs along with some non WWE documentary type wrestling DVDs and so on. A quick browse of any company’s website will bring some up.

What’s with the phone support?
Please read the reviews to see which companies have phone support; only about half of them do. Although this may sound bad, I’ve barely ever ran in to any issues as the whole system works well automated. If a disc is faulty just check the box on the envelope. If you want to cancel your account, do it from the website’s account options. If you get the wrong disc, leave a little note and send it back. That’s it. However if you really need to get in contact you can email them, which may take two or three days to reply. If you want to cancel your free trial before the your first bill, it would be a good idea to do it a good number of days before it ends just in case something goes wrong; just as a precaution.

What if a DVD gets lost in the post?
In all of our years of DVD rental experience we have never been pursued because of a lost disc that never made it or never made it back. In fact it has only happened twice and both times the company simply claimed the damages on postal insurance. If you lose many discs (aka you’re stealing them) they will look in to it further.

How long can I keep a DVD and when do I send them back?
You can keep your DVDs for as long as you want with no late fees (although you’ll still be paying your monthly fee, even if you’ve had the same DVDs for ages). Depending on your package, you can only have a certain amount of DVDs at once. So if you have a 4 DVD package, you can get 4 out at once, send one back and they’ll send the next one out. They do not all have to go back together. However your package also determines how many discs in total you can have per month, so if you plan to whiz through your movies choose an unlimited package. A good feature of the popular websites is a account holiday option, where you freeze your account for a certain period.
