Grocery Store Movie Rentals

For many years Grocery store movie rentals have been common place for the “mom and pop” based stores. They were never amazing, and may have lacked a lot of new releases, but if you needed a quick entertainment fix then an obscure movie from the local grocery store was a fairly good option.

We pretty much said goodbye to grocery store movie rentals when Blockbuster destroyed them along with all the other independent video stores. But now were seeing a revival, but not in the traditional sense.

Up and down the country grocery stores are now implementing DVD vending machines, or kiosks as they’re sometimes called. The business behind this is that a lot of people are moving on to online DVD rental, and regular DVD rental stores are seeing a drop off in customers, so the larger rental companies are using excess stock to fill vending machines in the hope that they catch random shoppers and their “impulse buying habits”. The grocery stores are happy because they get a cut without having to set up their own traditional store, the rental companies are happy because they’re getting their profits back, and the customers are happy because the system is quick and convenient, fitting in with their weekly shop.

These new grocery store movie rentals work in various ways, but usually you swipe a credit card, choose your selection and it dispenses like a candy machine. Once you’ve finished watching, you simply return it to the same machine, or one of the same brand and you card is charged. They keep tabs on the movie because your card is on file, and the computer system knows which one was rented, so if you tamper with it there will be consequences.

Although grocery store movie rentals may be good for some, they lack the huge choice that online DVD rental offers, and they do not give you free trials either. If you’d prefer to rent online for free, check out the main page or choose a company from our DVD Rental Trials section.
