Blockbuster is the industry standard in DVD rental and should be one of the first companies you try out. They are king of the high street and are now taking over the internet with competitive prices, a huge range on titles and good phone support. One of their newest features is the ability to buy Blu-Ray and video games from their online store, although you cannot rent games just yet.

Their free trial is 100% no obligation, meaning you can cancel at any time before your first bill and although their 60,000+ titles is slightly lower than Lovefilm, they have far more copies in stock, meaning you won’t have to wait for the latest releases to come back.

In my eyes there is a lot that makes Blockbuster stand out from the crowd. These features don’t necessarily matter if you just want to get your DVDs and run, but they give an extra pizazz that makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

Firstly most companies base their packages on the physical number of Discs, whereas Blockbuster base it on the complete DVD set. So when one company might charge you for a two disc set, Blockbuster will only charge you for one because both discs are pat of the same rental. This is very helpful when you are getting those extra long classics like the Godfather, or DVDs with lots of extras.

I also found their website interface particularly well done, offering a DVD search database like no other service. You can browse the usual genres etc, but the search function is very in depth, allowing you to search via movie title, actor, director, synopsis, certification, genre, language, year of production, sound format and even aspect ratio so you don’t get that awful widescreen letterboxing thing.

The website’s usefulness doesn’t stop there. In fact I’ve found myself on the site even when I wasn’t selecting a DVD. They have all the latest movie news and almost every DVD title has a review, meaning you can spend hours finding films others recommend. These include expert critic reviews and those from customers, giving you an all round picture. If that wasn’t enough they also often feature celebrities and their favorite list of movies, for entertainment reasons if nothing else. I mean who knew Vinnie Jones likes Finding Nemo?

Although it’s rare that you get a damaged disc Blockbuster offer an extra way to resolve the problem, in that you can report the error through the website rather than by ticking a box on the return envelope. They will even send the new disc out before they get the old one back, which is a notch up fro the other companies. They will never blame you for the damage even if you did accidentally damage it yourself (..erm not that I ever did that).

As far as their packages, they tend to switch them around an awful lot, but this at least shows that they are trying to be competitive. As of writing they offer the following deals:

1 Rental at a time, 2 Rentals Maximum per month, £4.88 (2 week free trial)
2 Rentals at a time, 4 Rentals Maximum per month, £7.82 (2 week free trial)
1 Rental at a time, Unlimited Rentals per month, £9.78 (2 week free trial)
2 Rentals at a time, Unlimited Rentals per month, £12.71 (1 month free trial)
3 DVD Rental at a time, Unlimited Rentals per month, £14.67 (2 week free trial)

Their 5 disc package seems to be on a hiatus.
